Imagine yourself sitting in a piazza in Rome, drinking campari, watching the dramatic sunset over Castel Sant'Angelo, and thinking of Tosca's fate.

And then imagine yourself in a little trattoria somewhere in the sun in Sicily,relaxing by the sparkling Mediterranean Sea, drinking the local vino and eating "Spaghetti alla Norma".

 

A tour to the scenes of triumph and tragedy of opera and history, romance and legend.
Meet in Rome, 8-28 October, for 10-15 people.
Performances include 'The Elixir of Love' by Donizetti at the Rome Opera House and 'Ellis Island' by Giovanni Sollima at Teatro Massimon, Palermo.
Co-escorted by David Groves, former head of Italian at Victoria University, Wellington, New Zealand, with wide experience of Italian culture, theatre, history and customs.

The Spanish Steps, Rome

Rome
Tosca places - see where Tosca threw herself from the Castel Sant'Angelo, the Colisseum, Roman Forum and the Capitoline Hill, one of the seven hills of Rome. The Pantheon, Spanish Steps, Piazza Navona.

Monte Cassino
6th century Benedictine Monastery, scene of a major battle of World War 2.

Amalfi Coast
World famous coast line where you eat fresh fish and drink Lacrima Christi from the vineyards on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius. Ravello, charming hilltop town where Wagner was inspired to compose Parsifal.

Isle of Ischia
The Mediterranean gardens, La Mortella, developed by Lady Susana Walton and her late husband, the British composer Sir William Walton.

Naples
With Mount Vesuvius in the background and the sparkling Bay of Naples. Teatro San Carlo, revered opera house of Rossini and Donizetti. Museo Archeologico Nazionale, with treasures of Pompeii and ancient Greek and Roman art.

Pompeii
Where everyday life stopped in 79AD when Mount Vesuvius erupted and buried this elegant Roman city.

SICILY
Romantic land of legend and hub of the Mediterranean. Greek, Roman, Arabic, Byzantine, Norman, French and Spanish invaders over 2000 years have all left their traces on the art, architecture and cuisine.

Palermo
Great artistic capital with Teatro Massimo, the largest opera house in Italy, reopened recently after 20 years of political wrangling.

Syracuse
A beautiful bay and ancient Greek ruins.
Agrigento
, the Valley of the Temples
Catania
Baroque city, birthplace of Bellini, where we will eat "Spaghetti alla Norma", named after his most famous opera.

Taormina
Dominated by Mount Etna, Teatro Greco,wonderfully preserved theatre on a magnificent site begun by the Greeks in 3BC.
